Q. Who can come to the Academy?

A. All students attending Shirebrook school will be guaranteed a place at the Academy and work within Derbyshire County Council’s admissions procedures.

The Sponsor is very keen that the Academy is seen as the first choice of local students and that it is an integral part of the community.

Q. How will the Sponsor support the Academy?

A. ALLRoads, County Property Services and Sheffield Hallam University as education partner are already providing a significant amount of time and expertise.

A £2 million financial endowment from ALLRoads and County Property Services will benefit students in a number of ways.
These will include:
  • residential experiences at home and abroad for students
  • sponsorship to further and higher education to provide opportunities for students
  • educational and cultural visits to enrich students’ experience of learning
  • business mentors for individual students to inspire them and raise their aspirations.
An additional specialism in Construction will be introduced reflecting the specialist expertise of ALLRoads. Students will gain valuable experience and insights from activities like work placements, coaching and mentorships. The existing specialism in Science will be retained and strengthened.

Sheffield Hallam University brings particular expertise from the world of higher education and will raise student aspirations around pursuing qualifications beyond their school years.

Q. When will the Academy open and where will it be built?

A. Shirebrook will open as an Academy in the existing buildings in September 2010 and the new buildings will open on the school site in September 2011.

Q. How will students benefit from the Academy?

A. The Sponsor wants to provide the best educational opportunities for students so that they reach their full potential, regardless of background and abilities.

The Academy will be welcoming, friendly and supportive for staff, students and visitors.

There will be strong and daily emphasis on values such as self respect, respect for others and self discipline.

Parents and carers will also be actively encouraged to get involved in school life and the education of their children so they understand the expectations of what they should be learning and the progress they are making at the Academy.

Personal achievement will be valued as much as national attainment and students will own and manage their success by setting their own targets and goals in consultation with teaching staff. There will be many opportunities to learn and achieve with academic, vocational qualifications having equal status.

Many people learn best in a practical environment through skills based approaches. Practical skills alongside functional, creative and academic opportunities will be offered.

Shirebrook students and staff will be able to use the technology efficiently to enable them to experience the benefits of a 21st century connected world.
