BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
The Construction Course
Shirebrook Academy is delighted to offer a construction course as part of its Post-16 provision for September 2011. Our construction course has been carefully selected to meet the needs of the learners, with careful consideration given to providing students with maximum opportunities to gain qualifications which may lead to a career in the construction industry.
The course is a full time course, based at both the Academy and at various construction projects in the region linked to our sponsor All Roads. The qualification at the heart of the course is the Edexcel Level 2 Diploma in Construction, which is worth the equivalent of four GCSE’s at A* to C grade.
Course Structure
Over the period of the course you will be based in school part time with at least one day per week working in the construction industry with our school sponsor ‘All Roads’. To complete the full BTEC diploma, you will have to complete 12 units of work.

Assessment details
The course is assessed internally and then externally moderated by the exam board. It is 100% coursework based, so there isn’t a final examination. Each of the units will be assessed by completing assignments
Enrichment opportunities
Throughout the course there will be many opportunities for students to experience elements of the construction industry. Examples may include -
- Working with the school sponsors All Roads on construction projects around the region.
- Visits to local businesses
Entry Requirements
To get onto this course you will need:
‘D’ grades in a GCSE design and technology subject, preferably Resistant Materials or Electronics.
A keen interest in developing a career in a construction related industry

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction has the equivalence of four GCSE A* to C grades, and it is possible for you to progress further into BTEC National diplomas or into further education, move into an apprenticeship or to help get a job in a construction related industry.
