Welcome to Year 8

Year group statement

Y8 are currently entering the second term of a transitional year at Shirebrook Academy. They are no longer the youngest in the school and have a thorough understanding of the expectations placed upon their shoulders. At the academy we are about to enter an exciting phase as we move into the new building. The Y8 cohort will play an important part in establishing it as a fantastic learning environment. Our emphasis as a year group will continue to be based around teamwork and support. With an inclusive nature and high expectations we look forward to four or more fantastic years developing our students into thoughtful, hard working and motivated individuals.

Year group overview

Y8 students are placed into 6 equal form groups with superb tutors to support both pastoral and academic monitoring programs. Students will complete weekly progress checks to ensure they are meeting their targets and reaping the rewards available for their efforts. They will be involved in an engaging timetable of activities in form time including whole class reading, PSHE and weekly journal reviews.

Year group council

Y8 will be represented on the school council by 2 students selected by the Year group to put forward the Y8 ’student voice’. Y8’s thoughts, feelings and actions will be of key importance to the transition into the new building.

Extracurricular opportunities

Numerous sessions run every day as stated on the student bulletin and by arrangement if students would like to start a club or group. The community event is once again up and running on a Wednesday evening.

Well done!

• Well done to E. Locke, S. Burns, S. Stubbs, A. Ashton, S. Harris and E. Cheeseman. The girls won first prize in the Nat West enterprise competition against many other local schools. Move over Lord Sugar!
• Congratulations to A. Ashton, R. Hooper, A. Cottam and B. Wells on their winning entries for the Christmas card competition. They looked fantastic!
• Thank you to all Y8 helpers for your support with the Winter Wonderland event. Your contribution was superb to what was an amazing day.
