Shirebrook It’s the Pit’s Project
7AR have been researching and investigating the historical link to Shirebrook Colliery in their history lessons and from their research they discovered some interesting facts about their own families! There are examples of student work and stories they would like to share. As well as looking at when Shirerbook Colliery started, the cage accident and the 1901 epidemic they also found out about the notoriety of the miners amongst other collieries!! Please take a look at their work and add any appropriate comments, particularly answering the questions – Why should we remember the pits?
In my family there was 1 person who I looked at on a photo was my great great granddad Geoff. He worked at shirebrook colliery but one day my granddad went down with three of his mates went in to one of the cages and and a chain snapped and he fell off it and the cage crushed his toes and was paralyzed for life.

We should remember the pit because all the things that the people who worked at the pit. If the pit was never there Model Village would not exist and Shirebrook would be tiny. Also, if we remember the pit we can pass it on to their children. Plus it is our history all the people who died working in the pit.
