Year 6 Transition

Transition to Shirebrook Academy

Moving to secondary education can feel like a big step for both children and their parents/carers, but it does not have to be a worrying time. For students joining us in Year 7 in September 2026, we are already working hard behind the scenes to make the transition as smooth, positive and reassuring as possible.

We are currently visiting children in their primary schools so that they can meet staff, ask questions and begin to feel more familiar with their new secondary school.

Please refer to the About Transition 2026 Introduction Q&A slides to view the presentation shown to students. Students with SEN, as well as those joining us from outside the local area, will also be offered additional visits to help them settle in with confidence. For further details, please refer to the About Our Enhanced Transition Programme document.

This academic year, we will be holding two Transition Days on 13th and 14th July 2026. During these days, students will meet their form tutor, other key staff and their form group, and will enjoy a range of taster lessons. They will also have the chance to get to know some of the teachers who will be supporting them when they start in September. These days are a wonderful opportunity for students to begin making new friendships and to feel more prepared for life at secondary school.

Students should gather outside the sports hall and wear their primary school uniform.

On Monday 13th July 2026, we will also be inviting parents/carers and Year 6 students to attend an information evening. More information, including timings, will be sent to parents/carers nearer the time.

How parents/carers can help prepare children for the move

There are lots of simple things families can do at home to support children during this time. Talking positively about secondary school can help build excitement and confidence. It can also be helpful to encourage children to ask questions, share any worries, and talk about what they are looking forward to.

You may find it useful to help your child build independence before September by practising small steps such as packing their school bag, checking their timetable, organising their uniform and getting ready in the morning on time. If possible, walking or travelling the school journey together in advance can also help your child feel more secure.

Establishing good routines around bedtime, getting up in the morning and completing homework can make the first few weeks feel much easier. A calm, consistent routine can help children feel more settled and ready to learn.

It can also help to reassure children that feeling nervous is completely normal. Many students worry about making friends, finding their way around or remembering all the new rules. Remind them that lots of other children will feel the same, and that staff will be there to help them settle in.

If you or your child has any worries or concerns about the transition process to Shirebrook Academy, please do get in touch so that we can work together to support them. Please email:
