Requests to withdraw students from Religious Education
Requests to withdraw students from Religious Education
Every pupil has a legal entitlement to Religious Education (RE). RE is a necessary part of a ‘broad and balanced curriculum’ and must be provided for all registered pupils in state-funded schools in England, including those in the sixth form, unless withdrawn by their parents (or withdrawing themselves if they are aged 18 or over). Inclusive RE is essential for students to be able to discuss issues which impact society and through learning about new religions and cultures can ‘experience the world’ enabling their growth into well-rounded adults.
ACET academies will grant requests from parents and carers, to withdraw their child from Religious Education lessons in schools in accordance with the school’s basic curriculum.
This is set out in section 71(1) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.
We welcome a discussion with parents should you wish to withdraw your child from RE, so that an informed decision can be made. We will always support parent, and carer wishes but also feel that an understanding of many religions is beneficial to all students.
Once withdrawn, students will be offered alternative learning to complete but are not required to be offered any other subject content or teaching. There can also be no cost incurred to the academy.
